the first week of school
2006-09-02 at 10:36 a.m.

Well, the first week of school went pretty well. Monday and Tuesday were staff development, which was largely pretty boring. Some of the stuff I could use, but a lot of it was more for the regular classroom teachers, and didn't have much to do with us specialists, but that's often the case. School started Wednesday and everything went pretty smoothly. We're doing this weird new thing called recess before lunch where the kids play first then eat. The idea is they won't rush through lunch so fast, and throw out most of the food, to go out and play since they already will have played, but there's still a lot more talking than eating going on. We'll have to see how it goes I guess.

My classes have been going pretty well. We have an autism program at school so both classes (primary and intermediate) come with other classes. That's going to be a bit of a challenge. The kids come with aides, but they are still going to be disruptive. I'm a little torn on the issue myself. I think it's very important the autistic kids have a time to interact with their "normal" peers and learn what a regular class is like. On the other hand, I think the regular ed students deserve just as good of a class as their peers. Hopefully it'll all normalize soon as the kids get used to each other. I'm always really impressed with the regular ed kids when they are in a class with students who are disabled. Once they realize that they are different from them, they just accept them. Wouldn't it be nice if we were all like that.

We have a 3 day weekend, which is nice as Monday is B's birthday. I'm taking him to a reggae festival tomorrow. He's always wanted to go, and we've always missed it. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait ;)

I got sucky news this week that my cousin has been shipped to Iraq. She'll be there for a few months and then her husband will be shipped out. Please keep her in your prayers. Thanks.
