the writing institute may fairly well rock
2006-06-03 at 3:47 p.m.

So, I just got home from my introductory meeting to the writing institute. (Ok, technicaly I got home 2 hours ago, and just woke up from my nap. There's something about waking up at 6:30 on a Saturday that makes me just want to cry...funny how I do ok the rest of the week, and at 6 too ;)

Anyway, so I think the writing institute today is going to be amazing. There's 12 students, plus 5 advisors (including the professor). We spent the day going over what will happen in July when we start up. We will be required to do a 75 minute presentation on a writing topic we choose. We were given an example today on incorporating pop culture into writing. This gal, a middle school teacher, used rap and hiphop (mostly from teh 70s and 80s as today's stuff is too vulgar) to encourage kids to write. The stuff she gets out of them is pretty great! I'm going to give it a try next year...
I'd do it this year, but hey, we're almost done :) I wrote a rap myself today off of one of the songs (part of the assignment). I was pretty blown away at myself, especially after people liked it :)

I'm thinking of doing my project on either storytelling and building characters as a way to find voice, or poetry as a way to find voice. Maybe I can combine them, we'll see...hmmm...

Hope your Saturday is fab!

My Hero of the Day: let's be honest, I got up at 6 on a Saturday...yay me! ;)

Listening to: the quiet...I'm looking forward to summer when I won't mind noise so much :)
